Michael Reiter

Shelter Island Highway Department
Candidate for Shelter Island Highway Superintendent

Shelter Island is more than where I live, it’s who I am. I grew up here, worked here, and I’m proud to give back to the community that has shaped my life.

With over 20 years of experience in the Highway Department, along with a background in carpentry, construction, small business, and fire service, I’m ready to lead with skill, integrity, and a hands-on approach that puts Shelter Island first.

I Am Here to Work for the People - To put our Island First - And to Listen to Everyone.

What I Represent

A Lifetime of Service to Shelter Island

What I Stand For:

- Road Safety – Widen roads for safer walking and biking, and work to add bike lanes

- Recycle, Reuse, Repurpose – Smarter waste handling and improved access

-  Repair of Town Landings – Safer for the public, fire trucks, and water runoff

- Financial Responsibility – Protect your tax dollars

- Efficient Roadwork – Organize maintenance with long-term planning

"Giving back to Shelter Island is a family tradition; it's my turn to lead with care and experience."

– R. Michael Reiter

Driven by Values - Focused on Results

Financial Responsibility You Can Trust

I believe your hard-earned tax dollars deserve respect and accountability.

As your elected official, I will prioritize responsible budgeting and transparent financial management.

I will fight to ensure every budget decision, every grant, contract, and expense, is made with care, transparency, and purpose.

Together, we can keep our taxes low without compromising the vital services our community depends on.

We can achieve safe, well-maintained roads, a strong highway department, and a Recycling Center without overspending.

I’m Committed to Financial Responsibility

Because Every Dollar Counts

Organize the Recycling Center to better serve the Community and the Environment

Our community’s Recycling Center is more than just a facility, it’s an opportunity. With smart, focused leadership, we can protect the environment, serve residents more effectively, and generate real benefits for our town.

Our community deserves a Recycling Center that works for everyone. As your candidate, I’ll lead the effort to improve efficiency, generate revenue, and ensure safe access for all residents. I’m committed to our community’s recycling center, serving residents better, and building a sustainable future.

At Our Recycling Center, I will prioritize the Environment and The Community

  • Improve Efficiency: Streamline waste management, hazardous material handling, and services to operate more effectively and safely.

  • Boost Revenue: Maximize the economic potential of recycling to generate additional income for community services.

  • Enhance Accessibility: Ensure every resident can safely access all areas of the facility to recycle, reuse, and repurpose with ease.

This is more than a promise, the future isn’t a dream, it’s a plan.

Protect Our Town Landings and Prioritize Road Safety

We deserve smarter infrastructure priorities.

We deserve town landings that are safe and accessible.
We deserve roads that are widened and free of debris with maintained shoulders to improve safety.

We can’t keep putting off the critical improvements that protect our island, ensure access for emergency services, and make our community safer, whether you walk, bike, drive, or boat.

With thoughtful, budget-conscious planning, we can make real progress on projects that benefit the entire community while preserving the unique character of our town.

As your candidate, I’m committed to protecting what makes our town special and making it safer and more accessible for all.

My Plan Focuses on Three Key Priorities

Improving Town Landings: We'll make our landings safer and more functional by enhancing access for fire trucks and emergency vehicles, managing water runoff to protect our environment, and preserving public access to the shoreline.

Prioritizing Road Safety: By widening and reclaiming paved roads and shoulders, we’ll create safer, walkable, and bikeable routes that serve residents of all ages.

Expanding Bike Infrastructure: Partner with the state to bring much-needed bike lanes to Route 114 and beyond, reducing traffic risks for everyone on our roads.

Together, we can protect what makes our town special and make it safer for everyone.
